Chromatography Flowers

Chromatography flowers are a fun and creative way to explore the science of chromatography while creating beautiful art pieces. This simple yet engaging activity allows you to witness the separation of colors and create stunning floral designs. With just a few materials and some basic steps, you can make your own chromatography flowers that are sure to impress.

Materials

  • Coffee filters
  • Washable markers
  • Scissors
  • Small cup of water
  • A dropper

Steps

  1. Begin by cutting the coffee filters into flower shapes. You can experiment with different petal shapes and sizes to create a variety of flowers.
  2. Next, use the washable markers to draw concentric circles or colorful patterns on the coffee filter petals. Be creative with your designs, as the colors will blend and separate during the chromatography process.
  3. Once you have decorated your coffee filter petals, place them on a flat surface and carefully add a few drops of water to the center of each flower using the dropper. Watch as the water travels through the
filter, carrying the ink with it. The colors will begin to separate and spread, creating beautiful patterns reminiscent of watercolor paintings.
  4. Allow the flowers to dry completely before displaying them or using them in other craft projects.
  5. Experiment with different color combinations, marker types, and flower shapes to create unique chromatography flowers each time.
